Before you unpack a single box: the checklist for cleaning a property you are moving into. Pre-furniture access makes this the cheapest cleaning window you will ever get — inside cupboards, unused taps, the top of the fridge you cannot reach later.

Six rules for actually finishing a DIY clean

The difference between a checklist that works and one that ends up half-ticked is almost always the process. These are the habits our own team follows on every job.

Pick a checklist

Choose the one that matches your situation. A move-in is not an end-of-tenancy. A deep clean is not a regular clean.

Time it honestly

A 2-3 bed end-of-tenancy clean takes 6–10 hours solo. If you have four hours and no steam cleaner, hire a pro.

Buy the right products

You need a descaler (Viakal or similar), a degreaser (Elbow Grease), a disinfectant, white vinegar, microfibre cloths, a good vacuum, a steam mop, and fresh sponges. Budget around £30–£50 for supplies.

Work top to bottom, dry to wet

Dust ceilings and lights first, then surfaces, then floors. Dry tasks (dust, sweep) before wet tasks (mop, polish). Otherwise you re-dirty clean surfaces.

Save the oven for last

Oven work is the single biggest time sink. Apply a degreaser and leave it for 30–60 minutes while you clean elsewhere, then come back. Never rush an oven.

Photograph before you leave

If it is an end-of-tenancy or move-in clean, take dated photos of every room. This protects you in deposit and inventory disputes.

DIY or hire a pro? A quick decision matrix

Not every cleaning job needs a professional team. Some absolutely do. Here is how we advise callers who are weighing up the two.

Why trust these checklists over a generic internet list?

Most cleaning checklists online are either AI-written (you can tell — vague verbs, no time estimates, "make sure everything is sparkling") or scraped from a cleaning-product supplier trying to sell bottles. Neither have actually cleaned a 3-bed semi at the end of a tenancy while the van idles outside.

Our checklists are different because they are not theoretical. The end-of-tenancy checklist was refined after 100+ agent inspections across HP11, HP15, SL7 and HP6 postcodes. The Airbnb turnover checklist came out of back-to-back Regatta weekends in Marlow where a missed detail costs a 4.8 score. If your tenancy agreement specifically requires "professional" cleaning, you likely need a professional invoice as evidence — doing it yourself and producing a deep photo log may not satisfy the clause. How do I know if a cleaning company is following a real checklist?

Ask for a copy before they start. A reputable company has a written checklist for every service and will happily share it. If they cannot produce one, they are working from vibes — and you will end up with an inconsistent clean that only looks good when you are watching.
